Welcome to the Ethical Computing guide to using Zimbra with Microsoft Outlook.
We’ve been using and supporting this Zimbra + Outlook setup since early 2019. After some initial issues with getting Zimbra working in an “Exchange like” way, we’ve invested a lot of time in making a pretty bulletproof user experience for people that need to use Microsoft Outlook as an email client for Zimbra. When deploying Zimbra mailboxes your users may come across a few issues, and we’ve addressed the most common ones below. We don’t profess to know Zimbra inside out, but we do support hundreds of Zimbra users who are generally pretty happy with the Zimbra + Outlook solution we provide.
About the Official Zimbra Documentation
The official Zimbra documentation can be found here, though note much of it applies to running a Zimbra server. As you’ve landed at this page, you may want to jump straight to the official Zimbra Connector for Microsoft Outlook User Guide here. The documentation is pretty detailed but it’s a bit dated and there’s not a single screenshot anywhere, so it’s very unfriendly.

About the Ethical Computing Zimbra Documentation
Unlike the official documentation, this documentation is designed to be user facing and user friendly. Most of our documentation is easy to understand and follow, with suitable images provided where possible. There are some parts of this documentation that are more technical; if you can’t understand some section, then perhaps you should call us for paid support services instead.
The Ethics of using Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Outlook
Lets be clear – we do not consider using Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Outlook an ethical choice. The software is closed source, your data is less likely to be private, the hardware needed to run them requires greater power (and needs more frequent replacement) and paying Microsoft for this software funds a large US tech firm, rather than your local community or the open source community. But to be pragmatic about it, if a user wants the comfort of a familiar email client while their data is (for example) repatriated away from a Microsoft 365 tenant into a set of Open Source and Open Core tools, then we’re going to support it. There are ways to use Zimbra without Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Outlook, and for some people, Zimbra + Outlook is one way to help businesses adopting more open and ethical computing solutions.
Suggested Environment
The documentation below is based entirely around the following platform, we’ve found it offers a very stable Zimbra + Outlook solution:
- A fresh install of Windows 11 Professional (64 Bit) 24H2.
- Application of our Microsoft Windows ISACRAPOS tool.
- A fresh install of Microsoft Outlook 2024 LTSC.
- Installation of the latest Zimbra Connector for Outlook.
- A Zimbra mailbox of a Professional, Business or Enterprise type.
