Refurbished Desktop & Laptop Stock List

Buying a refurbished desktop or laptop that comes pre-installed with Linux is a great way to start your Ethical Computing journey. We work with a number of trade and retail partners that specialise in refurbished desktops and laptops which we stress test and prepare before shipping.

The table below reflects the most recent stock availability across all suppliers, though is subject to change on a daily basis.

Specifications are taken from suppliers’ stock data and may occasionally contain an error. We’ll always confirm the exact spec with you before your order is placed.

How to order

If you’d like to place an order call us on 01603 554000 (or email refurbs@ethical-computing.uk) and we’ll do a live stock check with our upstream supplier. At that time (if the product you want is in stock) we’ll reserve the item with the supplier and then issue an invoice to be paid using a provided payment link so the order can be progressed.

What’s included as standard

Once the device arrives with us we’ll perform a stress test and then install the latest version of Ubuntu or Linux Mint. The turnaround time from order is up to a week.

Included Warranty

Every device comes with a standard twelve months’ warranty against hardware failure, provided on a return to base basis.

Faulty devices are repaired or replaced with a device of the same or better specification, or refunded at our discretion.

This warranty covers hardware faults, not day-to-day IT support which is available as an add-on service.

As with any hardware, we can’t be held liable for data loss resulting from a disk failure or a software issue. We’d always recommend keeping your own backup of anything important, on any device, new or refurbished.

Optional Premium Warranty

For extra peace of mind, we also offer an optional Premium Warranty, available as an add-on at the point of order for £100 + VAT

If we confirm a genuine fault, we’ll send you a replacement device of the same or equivalent specification, next business day, rather than you waiting on a repair. We’ll include a prepaid returns label and box with the replacement, so sending the faulty unit back to us is simple.

You’d need to send the faulty device back within a week of your replacement arriving. To protect against devices going astray, we place a temporary hold on your card for the replacement’s value when it’s dispatched which is released as soon as we receive the faulty unit back. It’s only taken as an actual payment if the faulty device hasn’t been returned within that window.

This Premium Warranty protects your investment as well as the device itself, so a hardware fault never turns into extended downtime for your team.

Disposing of your old device

If you’ve got an old PC or laptop you no longer need, we’ll collect it for an additional fee of £30 + VAT, this includes secure wiping of any disks installed in the device.

What happens to it after that depends on what we find when we look it over. Some devices are worth repairing and reselling, some get stripped for parts we can reuse elsewhere, and anything that’s genuinely reached the end of the road goes through our WEEE waste process.

We’ll decide the right outcome once we’ve seen the device, but the aim is always to keep it in use wherever we can, rather than defaulting to recycling as the first option.

Invoice & Payment

The Ethical Computing Project CIC is newly incorporated, so for now invoicing runs through via our associated company IT Norwich Limited, Company Registration Number 955169. A VAT invoice will be sent with the laptop.
